Kids Writing Workshops

What happens in summer camp?

Here what our kids have to say about the summer writing camps at TT Patton.

2011 SUMMER CAMPS – CLOSED

It’s our 3rd summer to offer summer writing camps for students, and this year we’ve expanded our offering to 5 different class selections.  Read through the summaries and then take a look below at class schedule.  Ready to select now?  REGISTER ONLINE!

CREATIVE WRITING [CW] Grades 6th-8th, limited to 10 students
This camp will teach interested youths variations of writing techniques. The program includes lessons that will give participants a sense of understanding and confidence when they write independently. Having fun while learning something new is top priority. The program includes instruction in the fields of journaling, non-fiction, fiction and poetry as well as practicing different writing styles, learning about character development and about plot mapping. Sessions will introduce students to fountain pens and how to write with them, letter writing and why it is important to send hand-written notes, and the history of the Postal Service.

SHORT BUT FICTION [SBF] Grades 6th-8th, limited to 10 students
This camp will help aspiring writers build a story. They will learn how to take their rough idea and present it in an interesting and ready to read format. By the end of this program, each writer should have a finished or a close to finished fictional story. The bulk of this class will be writing.

USING THE WRITE INGREDIENTS [UWI] Grades 4th-5th,
limited to 10 students
The program includes instruction for young writers on how to write independently and how to construct different pieces. Having fun while learning something new is top priority.  With the use of guided prompts, students will learn how different forms of writing are constructed. With writing maturity, their creative voice can sound through styles they are familiar with. Sessions will introduce students to fountain pens and how to write with them and the history of the US Postal Service.

PATTON’S POETRY [POE] Grades 6th-8th, limited to 10 students
The goal of this camp is help writers explore the beginning of written art:  poetry. The week will start out with structured poems, learning the ways of the poetry patriarch, and ending with free verse poetry and prose.

CALLIGRAPHY [CAL1] Grades 4th -5th, [CAL2] Grades 6th-12th
limited to 6 students in each session.
The goal of this camp is to give students a taste of what calligraphy is and to inspire them to pursue an education in the art. They should leave the course understanding pen angles, the ability to write phrases and the confidence to be able to continue practicing. The program includes history of writing and of writing utensils, the correct way to use a calligraphy pen, how to make different angles with the pen, and an overview of the alphabet in lowercase and upper case.

Can’t decide?  No worries!  Classes are scheduled throughout the summer so you can take more than one! Register today to confirm your seat!
